The architecture of Zakynthos was very much of Venetian influence due to its being occupied to various different nations over the years,  including the Venetians,  Byzantines,  French and English,  unfortunately almost all was destroyed during the disastrous earthquake of 1953.  Despite their attempts to rebuild the town to its original state unfortunately lack of funds and time did not allow this to happen to the extent of which it was desired,  having said this in Zakynthos town the Venetian feel is still very prominent.  Nowadays when building new constructions locals still try to maintain and preserve the traditional architecture,  you will come across many homes with the exterior painted in the very traditionally Zakynthian colour of bordeaux and if visiting the older villages on the island you will see the traditional old stone built homes.
