Agricultural Cooperatives Union of Zakynthos
Agricultural Cooperatives Union of Zakynthos, was established in 1920. Members of this union are 52 first rank cooperatives in which 5800 producers participate. The most important activity of the union is to trade the main agricultural products of the island which are wine, olive oil and blackcurrant. The collection, processing and packing of the above raw materials is done by the unions industrial facilities wine factory, olive oil packing plant and currant factory. They preserve a store which sells agricultural equipment, fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and other useful material.
Part of their activities is to provide services for the public like funding and vat return the way in which they are specified by the new European C.A.P. (Common Agricultural Policy). During the last few years they have made an effort to take advantage of the assets which are under union’s possession. Hopefully this will result to further financial growth and the making of the essential funds to enhance the quality and quantity of production. Although tourism on the island has become one of the most important sectors of activity the agricultural production still remains the base of it`s economy. Their target is to build a stronger relationship between those economic sectors. A lot of the products can be consumed by the visitors and this can become a live promotion of the quality of products. The aim of the cooperatives union is to strengthen and support the agricultural production of the island and make competitive products in the global market.
