The Monastery of The Virgin Anafonitria is particularly special to Zakynthians as it is here where Saint Dionysius spent the last years of his life. As tradition goes it was here where Saint Dionysius gave refuge to his brothers murderer thus taking the nickname ‘The Saint of Forgiveness’. The monastery was built in the 15th century during the early period of Venetian rule in Zakynthos, it is surrounded by several buildings including a tower that of which today functions as a belfry, these were originally used as a firewall. While walking through the grounds with its beautiful stone buildings and gardens abundant with flowers you will feel a sense of calmness overcome you. The monastery is home to the icon of The Virgin Mary 'Anafonitria', which is of Byzantine origin and came to Zakynthos from Alomeni, Istanbul in 1453. The monastery is open to the public and admission is free.
