The Shipwreck

And finally you are have arrived at the 'Shipwreck'! All you have been told, all you have heard and all you have seen on postcards does not do this beach justice! In 1982 the now famous 'Panayiotis' ship, that of which was said to be carrying illegal cigarettes, drifted aground on rocks on the beach due to bad weather and a damaged engine, giving the beach it its name and also a sense of mystery. Having said that, even without the wreck of the ship the beach itself which is not made of sand but tiny white pebbles, the steep white rocks that surround it, and the deep turquoise sea are all natural beauties themselves not to be missed!

The beach can only be reached by boat which leave from various different areas of Zakynthos. During peak periods and weekends hordes of tourists come to admire the shipwreck so it's probably best to try and come at a quieter time so that you can really appreciate it! Before you leave for the Shipwreck be sure to check the weather as the winds in this region can be very strong, making it impossible to reach the beach. Whats even more impressive is the breath taking view from above with its wild beauty and the endless blue sea that stretches for as far as the eye can see, from the same viewing platform you can also admire the monastery of St. George which is situated just below. So, have your camera ready, wait in line and take a stunning ‘picture postcard’ type photo. Upon leaving you can buy local products from street vendors.

Before you set of the Shipwreck call the relevant port depending on the area that you wish to leave from in order to find out if the weather permits sailing.
