A trip in the blue caves with Kayak
Our day started about 9.30am when we left from Ag.Nikolas, Volimes. Dimitris (from Zante Blue Sea) brought 3 kayaks for 6 people (they were double kayaks). The kayaks were excellent, even for people that have no or limited experience, getting about in the sea with these small floating vehicles is as easy as walking!!. We kayaked for 40 minutes until we reached the far end of Skinari cape, (this is actually the northest point of Zakynthos). Despite the fact that we where paddling against the wind no one felt tired. Our exploration through the blue caves begin once we started paddling back. Every few hundred meters there was another cave, there were both small caves and big caves, each one with its own unique personality with various colours and light. When we were about half way back we stopped in a large cave that formed a small bay. Here we left our kayaks and dived into the sea. Dimitris had also brought with him gear for snorkelling and the waters here are perfect for snorkelling!! As the sunlight reflects on the sea it creates such an atmosphere that you feel like you are swimming in a huge aquarium. The Mediterranean marine life may not be as colourful as some of the more tropical waters but diving into the deep blue, crystal waters with the sunrays beaming down creates an amazing celestial effect. And you know what; we even managed to see a seal, and considering that there is just one family of seals on the island we were very lucky!! After diving we slowly travelled through a few more caves before finally returning back at Skinari bay. Here we ended our day in an amazing tavern. I can strongly recommend this fish taverna as eating good fish in Zakynthos is as rare as eating good crocodile meat. La Storia tavern proved to be one of the best also with reasonable prices. In fact it reminded me of how the tavernas used to be some 20 years ago. Check out the root here
