The Byzantine Museum

The Museum of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine art is the largest museum here in Zakynthos and it was built after the earthquake of 1953. Upon entering the Byzantine Museum you will see how they have managed to capture how the island once was before the earthquake of 1953 based on a photograph of 1934. This is one of the few opportunities to see exactly how things were back then. In the halls there are images that will take you back in time and you will see the ruins of churches and buildings after they were hit by the earthquake.

The Museum contains Byzantine icons, wood carvings, impressive temples and shrines, murals, paintings from the 15th, 16th and 17th century by artists including Doxaras, Koutouzis, Kallergis, Damaskinos and Tzanes. The contribution of the Byzantine Museum is particularly important as the museums treasures include those from the post-Byzantine period that originally arrived on the island from various parts of the Ottoman-occupied Greece.
